How to change the current trend:

The divorce rate is at an astonishing 40%. In the United States, nearly 1 of every 2 marriages will end in divorce.

As my husband and I prepare to celebrate our tenth wedding anniversary this year, two of his brothers (who married several years later) will be ending theirs. Words cannot describe how deeply this saddens me. Divorce is not just about this 'couple' anymore. In most cases, there are homes, pets and more importantly, children involved. According to this article in the New York Times, "About 60 percent of all marriages that eventually end in divorce do so within the first 10 years" and even higher for college-educated professionals. So, what can we do to change this startling trend?

I went into my marriage as a product of a divorce after my own parents separated when I was 6 years old. I married young, but not immaturely or naively. I took my vows so seriously, and still do to this day. Marriage and weddings are not for the weak. Though the party is glamorous, life is not. I urge you to fully understand the commitment that you are making.

To have and to hold, from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness or in health, to love and to cherish 'till death do us part. And hereto I pledge you my faithfulness.

Check out these recent US statistics and let me know what you think:

* Number of marriages: 2,162,000
* Marriage rate: 7.1 per 1,000 total population
* Divorce rate: 3.5 per 1,000 population (44 reporting States and D.C.)

Now do you still think you're ready to get married? I'll urge you to look at one final reading assignment explaining the differences in "pink & blue sunglasses."

I leave you with a sincere congratulations and best wishes!
